Most Accurate Hearing Evaluations Are Performed in The Office

We have state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment

Begin your patient’s journey with us!  We are very thorough in determining your diagnosis.

Testing and Examinations Performed

Video Otoscopy

To examine the outer ear integrity.  View your ear canal for cerumen/ear wax, deformities and tympanic membrane (eardrum) for scarring or perforations.

Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure tone tests measure the lowest level of sound that a patient can hear.  Tones will be evaluated by air and bone conduction.

Speech Reception and Word Recognition

It is important to find the lowest level a patient can understand and repeat words.  Then additionally when speech is made loud enough for you to hear, how many words can you repeat correctly in quiet.  We evaluate each ear separately and then check your understanding using both ears at the same time.  We will display the results of your testing in an audiogram which accurately charts the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss.  We will show you the sounds that you are missing.

Speech In Noise Testing

This measures how well a patient can hear, understand, and repeat sentences in the presence of background noise  This measures the speech to noise ratio to determine the level of difficulty one experiences in everyday life and determine if the brain reorganization has occurred due to untreated hearing loss  This is done for each ear separately and then both ears together.  Untreated hearing loss increases the risk of dementia by 50% (Lin et al 2011).  A recent study published in the Lancet found that the use of hearing aids can reduce the risk of cognitive decline by 48%

Other tests will be recommended on a case-by-case basis depending on patient complaints, age, or cognitive abilities.

Tympanometry

This is a pressure test to check the flexibility of your eardrum and its ability to transmit sounds to the cochlea end organ of hearing.  This test evaluates Eustachian tube dysfunction and fluid in the middle ear space and presence of TM (eardrum) perforations.

Tinnitus Evaluations

An evaluation of a patient’s tinnitus will be typed based on frequency  of the sound, severity, and impact on their quality of life.

Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) Testing

This is performed for children, tinnitus patients, cognitive challenged patients, and confirmation of pure tone test results, monitoring ototoxic drugs, and effect of noise exposure.  DPOAEs are used to assess the health and function of outer hair cell in the cochlea (inner ear).  When outer hair cells (OHCs) are damaged or dysfunctional, DPOAEs are reduced or absent.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Testing

This testing is used for infants who are referred from newborn hearing screening or young children who can’t do traditional hearing evaluations using visual reinforcement audiometry.  This test measures how well sound travels through the outer/middle/inner ear, auditory nerve to the brainstem.

Auditory Processing Evaluations

Some children or adults have normal hearing sensitivity but have trouble processing the information to properly understand speech.  Something is affecting the part of the brain that processes how you hear.  We have a complete battery of tests to determine the category or type of APD.

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA)

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) is typically used for infants and young toddlers aged 6 months to 2-3 years. The test conditions the child to turn his/her head towards the sound as is rewarded by a visual lighted animated toy. As the children grow older, they can transition into conditioned play audiometry (CPA).
